History

Middlesex County was established in 1675. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area and its county seat is New Brunswick. It was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. New Brunswick began attracting a Hungarian immigrant population around the turn of the century by the Johnson & Johnson factories located in the city. The first settlement in New Brunswick was made in 1681, and was called Prigmore's Swamp, then Inian's Ferry. In 1714, the name was changed to New Brunswick, named after the city of Braunschweig, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The Declaration of Independence received its third public reading in New Brunswick.
